Silk and cotton stockings have been reported to be worn in Japan and China, as well for even a longer time. Stockings evolved from the sock in the 12th century in Europe.

These are not pantyhose, which are all attached as one garment. We are talking about actual stocking that are open at the thighs. One would use the garter belt to hold these hose up for them.
